Slideshow: Mountaintop Trouble

A great little slideshow of people - from my mother's hometown of Bob White - talking about the cost of surface mining, the one not measured in dollars.

Another fatality in an underground mine: Eastern Kentucky miner dies in roof fall

If you've been following any mining related news, you'll find this interesting. This is what happens when the MSHA is in the habit of imposing piddly fines: the coal operators ignore real safety problems.

Two more WV coal mine fatalities yesterday have prompted this response - in a large front page headline in this morning's local newspaper. Not much more information has been released yet.

Also in the Charleston Daily Mail

Boone County is where most of my family hails from, and where a number of villages (note to the H.S.: I wouldn't call them hardscrabble, though they are rough, worn-out, and poor, and a far cry from the bucolic New England-esque countryside in Roane Co.) have been obliterated by large surface (aka mountaintop removal) mines. One of the accidents yesterday was at a surface mine owned by my favorite coal company, Massey Energy.

I stand by my defense of Mr. Hatfield of the ICG, who owns the Sago mine. I think he acted humanely in standing up before us all during the aftermath of the accident. However, I also heard that his company tried to prevent UMW representatives from entering the mine with the MSHA inspectors last week, although their presence was requested by some of the miners. What utter bullshit.

If you want to see some photos of surface mining, go to the OVEC website.

I am ambivalent about our governor, but I'd sure like to see him force some safety legislation through, and this is a good time for him to be stepping up to it.
