Monday, October 31, 2005 ( 10/31/2005 10:11:00 AM ) DN There's no pictures here, people It seems, from looking at my blog stats, that the short entry I wrote called Badly Drawn Girl is quite popular. I came across the piece below on the same subject. However, I question the author's conclusion that The feminist revolution appears to have successfully helped foster an environment that makes it "cool" to be a girl. If it is so cool to be a girl, why are we so frightened and disturbed when our boys act like girls? It is an insult still, (just as it was in the seventies when I was a kid), if you are a boy, to throw like a girl or to run like a girl, or to act like a girl or to talk like a girl, or to cry like a girl. The feminist movement has changed things, but it hasn't changed this. And as women, we need to look at our own culpability in the matter. Are we still so afraid of "making" our children gay? Why do we assume a boy like this will be gay, but don't worry about a girl who's a tomboy? I think homophobia is not a small part of it, but I have no answers that satisfy me. I'm filled with ambition and good intentions. I'm doing preliminary work on my project. Yesterday I checked my email & found there's a local group (maybe only one or two of us, though, who knows?) scheduling meetings right here in Huntington during the month of November for Nano participants. I'll go, just to see who else is doing it....
