Friday, February 27, 2004 ( 2/27/2004 11:18:00 AM ) DN Reading the headlines Where's our Watergate? Dammit, we deserve one. We just know there's something secretive, unethical & power-maddened about Bush & the Republicans. Where's the big one? Here's my take on the scandal prospects. *National Guard service: much ado about a slim record of service. Nothing big here unless maybe someone finds the lost/purged records AND there's damaging stuff in them. Bush did what many others (although not John Kerry) of privileged backgrounds did: avoided Vietnam legally. John Kerry is the son the elder Bush wishes he had. *White House leak of CIA agent Valerie Plame: maybe. If only the White House had secret tape recordings.... *Lies in the State of the Union: dead dog. *WMD/intel: this is not explosive - nothing could be explosive since pretty much everyone knows that the intelligence was weak and the threat inflated. It's ugly, though, and big: probably enough to ruin careers (Blair, Powell, etc., but not Tenet?). Will it bring down Bush? *Haliburton/Cheney: nope. Business as usual. Plus it's too complicated to follow business deals. We need something juicier. *UN eavesdropping: too soon to tell. # Thursday, February 26, 2004 ( 2/26/2004 11:10:00 AM ) DN West Virginia in the news! Mel Gibson's father has bought a home in Summersville, for the privacy, and because of this: Charleston Daily Mail: "'(Jews) have to go where there is money,' he told Steve Feuerstein, host of Speak Your Piece, a show on New York's WSNR 620-AM. 'There is no way they would come to West Virginia. They have to have some place to go that has money. They didn't work in the mines, you can bet your boots.'" The bright note is that these comments come from a man who denies the Holocaust. # Wednesday, February 18, 2004 ( 2/18/2004 01:53:00 PM ) DN How much of a collection effort will these candidates make when they're on council? City of Huntington to sue residents with delinquent fees Somehow I can't see any of these 7 candidates for city council as being Part of the Solution. # Tuesday, February 17, 2004 ( 2/17/2004 04:04:00 PM ) DN I've been telling people about this for 2 weeks so I thought I should post the link. Spin Control article # Friday, February 13, 2004 ( 2/13/2004 04:26:00 PM ) DN Yes, still here. Long sigh. In these sorry times when a Tokyoite can't get a beef bowl, I have been: reading news of politics learning to knit still reading Katharine Graham's memoir making decorating decisions on my dining room - a project that's gaining momentum like an avalanche--walls, drywall, spackle, paint store, wallpaper, chair rails, lighting, floor refinish, rugs, furniture, color schemes, ad infinitum trying not to think about Timberlake & Jackson (but why does the press now term it the Jackson breast-baring incident--excuse me, there was a second party involved--the one doing the clothing ripping, in fact) waiting for spring. Prevailing mood: vague malaise, with rhyme. Following the primaries. Enjoyed this essay. I too will be sorry to see Dean leave, so I'm glad he's reconsidered as of now. Election glossary Pick your presidential candidate. I had to be a Sharpton gal... # |
